The Great Dismal Swamp near Suffolk, Virginia, 1907. Caption reads: "The Great Dismal Swamp. Lies in the peninsula between the James River, of Virginia, on the North, and the Albemarle Sound, of North Carolina, on the South. It extends over a vast area of nearly one thousand square miles, and is covered by a thick stratum of spongy, vegetable soil, supported and augmented by a luxurious growth of aquatic plants, brushwood and timber.
