Burnside's men attempting to cross Antietam Creek in the valley below. The battle in 1862 between 90,000 Federals and 40,000 Confederates resulted in a stalemate, but Lee's subsequent withdrawal ended his first effort to carry the Civil War outside of the Confederacy."
