|
Description |
Battery Hill, Williamsport, Maryland, circa 1961-1980. Caption reads: "Captain Agner [sic] Doubleday (originator of baseball in 1839) - When Capt. Doubleday under Gen. Patterson's command crossed the Potomac River at Williamsport, on June 16, 1861, the incident was important insofar as it represented one of the first invasions of the Southland by Union troops. At the Battle of Antietam in 1862, he served as a general, and in 1863 he again crossed the Potomac, here on his way to action at Gettysburg. Williamsport is also noted for its being considered by Geo. Washington as the capital of the United States." Postcard number: ICS-104745.
