Title |
United Farm Workers Organizing Committee leader Cesar Chavez addressing a rally in support of the union and the non-union grape boycott during a march from Columbia, Maryland to Washington, DC, 1970
|
Description |
Caption on reserve: "The United Farm Workers, their ranks strengthened by the presence of more than 1,000 other trade unionists, students and clergymen, marched 30 miles from Columbia, Md., to Washington to rally public support for their union and boycott of non-union grapes. Carrying U.S. flags, the "strike" banner familiar to Southwest workers and the Aztec eagle of UFWOC, the marchers followed the emblem of Our Lady of Guadalupe and pulled a 300-pound "freedom" bell donated by Britain's Transport and General Workers. The bell will remain chained, UFWOC leader Cesar Chavez says, until all farm workers are free to organize and bargain." Issue of 5-16-70.
