|
Description |
James River and skyline, Richmond, Virginia, circa 1981-2010. Caption reads: "Richmond-on-the-James, Richmond, Virginia. Richmond was founded because of the James River falls. In the early 1600's, navigation from the ocean was interrupted here by rapids, boulders, and islands position precariously in the James. Later, George Washington's Kanawha Canal was built to bypass them, bringing raw materials from the frontier of the Blue Ridge." Postcard number: WR 045.
